Sure we can highly anticipate the films coming next month, but what can we look forward to further down the road? Is there anything that we’ve been waiting a long time for? Is there a film we can truly get excited for, despite the long wait? Well, I can assure you the answer to all these questions is a resounding YES. Take a look below and see if any pick your fancy, because a selection of these are the definition of anticipated films…
Three Thousand Years of Longing
After seven years since the premiere of Mad Max: Fury Road, George Miller is returning with… a love dream. The plot follows a scholar in Istanbul who meets a djinn who grants her three wishes in exchange for his release, with surprising results.
Don’t Worry, Darling
Olivia Wilde follows up her critically acclaimed feature debut Booksmart with this period thriller about a 1950s housewife (Florence Pugh) who suspects that the perfect suburban life her husband’s mysterious job provides for her — and her husband’s mysterious job itself — may conceal a sinister truth.
Halloween Ends
Director David Gordon Green and writers Danny McBride and Scott Teems successfully sequel-booted (is that even a word?) the film. With 2018’s Halloween, they rebooted (or reboot-queled, perhaps?) the Halloween franchise, and depending on the response, they decided to offer us a full trilogy. The trilogy concludes with the fittingly titled Halloween Ends, in which Laurie Strode, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, defeats Michael Myers for good.
Black Adam
Dwayne Johnson has been attached to star in Black Adam since at least 2014, but he won’t make his big screen debut until 2022, when he’ll join the DCEU as the all-powerful antihero. There’s undoubtedly an onscreen crossover to look forward to in the future as the adversary to Zachary Levi’s Shazam. Dwayne Johnson deserves to play the superhero we all know and love!
Amsterdam
20th Century Studios announced that David O. Russell’s next picture, Amsterdam, would be released in November 2022 during a presentation at CinemaCon. The cast contains a variety of well-known actors, including Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, Taylor Swift, and Mike Myers, yet the plot is largely unknown.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
In a really tragic and startling turn of events, Chadwick Boseman, the hero of Black Panther, died of colon cancer in 2020, and filmmakers and fans all across the world mourned his death. This naturally raised concerns about what would happen to the Marvel character, who was expected to play a key role in the MCU’s future. As it turns out, a sequel will be released in 2022, but Boseman will not reprise his role, and the tale will instead focus on King T’Challa’s fiery sister Shuri, who will be played by Letitia Wright. Apart from that, little is known about the film, particularly how T’Challa’s absence would be addressed.
Avatar: The Way of Water
It’s taken almost a decade and a half, but the long-awaited sequel to James Cameron’s once-highest-grossing picture of all time, Avatar, is finally here. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) now have a family on Pandora, but when old foes return, they must flee and find a new home. The cast has been expanded to include Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, and Edie Falco.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Zachary Levi reprises his role as Shazam!, the 2019 smash DC superhero picture about a juvenile foster orphan who gains superhuman abilities after using the word “Shazam!” Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu join the cast as Hespera and Kalypso, Atlas’s daughters who will serve as the story’s main villains.
Untitled Mario Movie
We don’t know much about this one other that it’s being produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination (Despicable Me) and Shigeru Miyamoto, the Mario designer. We also know that it will be a CGI film, which means it will most likely be far more faithful to the iconic character than the widely mocked 1993 feature film adaptation, and that Chris Pratt will voice the renowned Goomba-stomping plumber. Princess Peach will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy, with Bowser and Donkey Kong being voiced by Jack Black and Seth Rogen, respectively. But there’s still no word on Luigi.
Sesame Street
Since the release date was announced in 2019, and the original start date of production on the picture in 2020 had to be postponed owing to COVID-19, this one is still up in the air. Expect to see Anne Hathaway, Bo Burnham, and Chance the Rapper hanging out with Big Bird, Grover, Elmo, and the rest of the Sesame Street crew in the third feature film spin-off of the beloved children’s educational TV series if everything falls into place.
