As the weather drops as winter draws near, we can’t help but daydream about what is in store for us in the upcoming season. Planning our 2023 outfit is a great way to pass the gloomier months as getting ahead of the game never hurt anyone.
Fashion month didn’t let us down; from fun check suits and LBDs at Chanel to fringing and cut-outs at Victoria Beckham’s Paris Fashion Week debut, there are plenty of SS23 trends that we can’t wait to wear.
Tailoring
At Valentino, slouchy, oversized blazers were in style, and Chanel chose whimsical pink relaxed-fit versions of its iconic bouclé jackets. Fortunately, Victoria Beckham came through with straightforward tailored jackets that served as tiny dresses if you’re a die-hard fan of fine tailoring.
Mini Dresses
Speaking of the devil, short dresses are back, and for SS23, texture is king. Givenchy’s pearl adornments and Chanel’s belted LBDs added a touch of grandeur, while Versace’s bright purple chromes felt flashy in the nicest way possible.
Lace
Many designers favored sweeping maxis with stylish cutwork, and lace was everywhere. Burberry’s tardy London Fashion Week presentation featured items inspired by baby blue lingerie, while Dior and Versace exuded gothic glamor.
Fringing
Versace’s buttery leather hems had a very “cool girl meets cowboy” feel to it, whilst Victoria Beckham’s version had ra-ra minis and incredibly energetic hems.
Thigh-high Splits
SS23 will include the dramatic bombshell split that we are used to seeing on the red carpet. Givenchy’s silky slip dresses, Dries Van Noten’s vibrant florals, and Prada’s glossy midis are leading the way and are extremely into it.
Denim
Who would have believed that for SS23, designers turned denim seductive? A.W.A.K.E.’s asymmetric fitting shirts looked hippie-chic when worn with soft brown co-ords, while Bella Hadid’s buckle Givenchy bra emanated practical sexiness.
Cut-Out Dresses
With its elastic geometric patterns, British innovator Poster Girl has been setting the pace for the cut-out trend. However, for the upcoming season, we’re enjoying cut-outs with greater proportions, taking influence from designers like Andreadamo, Valentino, and A.W.A.K.E.
Blue
Hello! Laura Weatherburn, the style editor for fashion, offers her opinion on the cool color scheme for the coming season. “As an alternative to the sickeningly sweet Barbiecore pink trend, I adore a vivid cerulean blue. It has a somewhat more upscale feel, can be worn all year round, and blends seamlessly into my almost entirely black wardrobe. Particularly stylish, I have my eye on an enormous overcoat by Christopher John Rogers.”
Animal Print
“The animal print trend is very much marmite in the fashion world; everyone has an opinion on it. On the one hand, I adore zebra print, particularly when accessorizing, “Clarifies Laura. “I find it difficult to understand the leopard look. As a result, come summer, I very likely may be wearing an Alessandra Rich twinset.”
Utility
“Peak Y2K, satin jumpsuits, sheer cargo trousers, and low-slung belted skirts—thanks to Miu Miu—have been upgraded for a real dress-up moment—make up the glam utilitarian trend. Put on a boiler suit, let the zipper fall to the navel, and don some killer heels “Input from Laura.
Mermaidcore
Designers have been hard-hit by the news of Disney’s impending live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Expect fishtail silhouettes, glittering fabrics that flow over curves, and dramatic ornamentation inspired by scales. For your fix, look to brands like 16 Arlington, Valentino, and Elie Saab.
Ultra-Femme Sheers
At the moment, sultry mesh and sheer materials are popular, but with a decidedly feminine twist. Think silky maxis at Nensi Dojaka, flirty ruffles at Valentino, and cool-girl chevrons at Chanel.
Grunge
The SS23 runways have been covered in tartan, indicating that grunge is making a comeback. Play it casual with a plaid shirt from Bottega Veneta, or keep an eye out for items with botanical embroidery à la maison Dior.
Costume Drama
The focus for SS23 is on costume-inspired accents like capes, puff sleeves, corsetry, and balloon silhouettes. Girls of Regencycore, eat your heart out.
Sultry Hoods
By choosing a beautiful hooded gown and raising the stakes, channel your inner Grace Jones and take inspiration from Saint Laurent, Alaa, and Valentino.
Textures Galore
Even while feathers, sequins, and fringe are party favorites, they are also officially appropriate for the spring and summer, according to the runways. Utilize the post-Christmas bargains to start off 2023 with a textural flourish.
Silver Metallics
Glossy metallics have taken on a cool vibe for the upcoming season, with silver leading the way. For some inspiration, look to Chanel’s cami dresses, Valentino’s maximalist outerwear, and Altuzarra’s pleats.
