Baby Crying Contest
Parents give their infants to sumo wrestlers at the Nai Sumo Baby Crying Festival in Tokyo in the hopes that they may start crying during the event. They have their own justification, even though it could seem a little irrational.
The ancient tradition is thought to have spiritual benefits since the child’s cries are thought to scare away any nearby demons who could otherwise harm them. The sumo wrestlers can wear a spooky mask or shout right in the faces of the kids.
Godzilla Has Citizenship
The population of Tokyo’s Shinjuku ward is about 17,000 people. However, the biggest inhabitant of all time has only one name: Godzilla. In 2015, the infamous lizard that had three times terrorized the city received citizenship and was named the region’s tourism ambassador.
The idea was to draw tourists from all over the world who were impressed by the giant’s performance in the very popular Godzilla franchise. Well, that and the desire for Godzilla to keep watch over the Kabukicho district. Godzilla was referred to be “the pride of Japan” by the ward’s mayor.
