If you’ve ever commuted to work by public transportation or used the subway to travel from one part of the city to another, you’re aware of how unpredictable your ride can be. This is due to the fact that traveling to and from work can feel like the most dangerous part of a commuter’s day. These commuters took pictures of some of the craziest things they saw on their way to and from work.
Dressed to Commute
In the off chance that you were unaware, this is Sophie Turner. Not the same Sophie Turner as the one who plays Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones; this is a different Sophie Turner. She is a well-respected figure in the world of modeling, and she always goes out of her way to ensure that she is dressed in a way that will impress people no matter where she is in the world.
Even when she was going through the airport with her luggage, she looked absolutely stunning in this gorgeous gown, and her bags were even coordinated with her attire. That’s some serious dedication!
Autofrisk? Really?
Commuting can be a real challenge and with the rise of machines getting stronger as each day goes on, the less useful humans actually are. Take this situation, where this commuter was shocked to find out that she’d need to be frisked – not by a guard, but by a robot!
Autofrisk is apparently a thing and it might be coming to an airport near you! Just put your hands on the panels and the machine will do the rest (apparently).
Perfect Moment for a Picture
The funniest pictures aren’t always pre-planned or well-staged. Instead, the funniest pictures often come from someone with quick access to a camera at the perfect moment.
This person wasn’t necessarily doing anything funny on their own but just so happened to be in the right place at the right time. The perfect time, in fact, for this photographer to catch a picture of them with the hat painted on the subway wall floating above their head.
It’s Not What it Seems
Anyone who is commuting regularly via plane needs a pillow to keep their neck from aching every time they fall asleep in their seat. It is a real lifesaver and these days, they’re pretty cheap to acquire.
However, you might want to think twice about what color pillow you buy and where you put it while you’re walking around. Upon first glance, we were very confused by this photo, and understandably so!
No Seats Left
When you’re getting ready to start your morning commute, you probably already know that there’s not much you can do to ensure a comfortable seat – if you get one at all.
This person decided they knew exactly how to make their commute a little more bearable. Instead of hoping for an uncomfortable subway seat or suiting to standing, they just packed their handy hammock to hold them up while they rested. We’re sure that all the other passengers here were thrilled.
The Fast and the Glamorous
When you think of people who ride a motorbike to work, it is normal to assume that the person under the helmet is a heavy metal fan laden with tattoos or a guy hard as nails, like Vin Diesel.
But the truth is that people who commute to work via motorbike come in all shapes and sizes, like this woman, for example. She doesn’t let her mode of transport prevent her from looking like the most professional individual at the office.
Making Quite a Racket
You can’t blame someone for having to take the occasional bag with them on public transport. Not everyone has another option for their commute and everyone needs all of their supplies at their destination.
That doesn’t mean that some of the things that people bring on their commute won’t catch the attention of their fellow commuters. This person is a pretty good example of that and they definitely raise plenty of questions about not only why they have this massive racket but where they even got it!
Stop, it Tickles!
Frisking can be annoying, pervasive, and can even make one feel victimized, unfortunately. But by the looks of this commuter, they seemed to feel completely safe around this guard a the airport.
Moreover, they couldn’t help but laugh every time the guard got close and was simply doing their job. Some people are more ticklish than others and this woman appears to be one of the most ticklish people on the face of the earth.
Matching Outfits
Whether you subscribe to the trends of high fashion or not, most of us want to dress in a way that represents us and what we love and are interested in.
For this person, apparently, their style was the seats they sat on riding the subway. While they surely didn’t notice until it was too late, it seems like they’re finding the humor in the situation that their shirt matched the subway seats exactly.
Grease Lightning!
You know, it’s not just Danny Zuko and the T-Birds who know how to spice up a ride. Don’t judge a book by its cover. There are plenty of people out there, from all walks of life, who love nothing more than giving an old car a much-need makeover.
Take this woman for example, who had fitted this Volkswagen Bug with some sweet rims. That was just the start of an incredible transformation, and she was driving that thing down the road in no time.
A Knight in Shining Subway
We’ve looked a lot already at how you might see something on the subway you won’t expect – especially an outfit that doesn’t seem to fit the mold of the average commute.
This person probably donned this outfit partially for the comedic effect but it definitely worked. We can even see in the picture other commuters reacting in various ways to the sight before them. To be fair, it’s not often that you see someone in full armor anywhere anymore.
Just Some Books
If you’re bringing something on public transport that you aren’t supposed to, you have to make sure it’s properly disguised so that you don’t get caught.
This person probably had the right idea at first. You can’t bring a chicken on the subway but no one will bat an eye if you have a case of books with you. That is, they wouldn’t unless there was a live chicken peeking out of the handles of that case.
OK, Do it Again
For some reason, we can’t help but feel like this commuter was designed to pull out some Yoga moves in the middle of customs. The cynic in us says that this guard is just making this commuter pass through the metal detector for ulterior motives.
Or maybe she actually is wearing something made from metal and she forgot to take it off. Who knows. Just let the poor girl pass through and let her catch her flight!
Cap the Pen Next Time
When you’re on public transit commuting in a space with standing room only, things slip your mind. It’s to be expected when there’s so much going on.
This poor person had all their things in order except one big one: they forgot to put the cap on their pen. Since it was keeping its place in their hair, the tip ran over their back every time they turned their head. It makes for an interesting design but we’re pretty sure it’s not what they were trying to do.
Scooter Commuter
If you are commuting to and from work every day, you might as well do it in style, and what better way than to do it riding one of these bad boys? A scooter oozes style. Have you ever been to Italy, practically everyone there rides a school all over the place there?
This woman is certainly rocking the look and it appears that her commute to and from work is her favorite part of the day. It helps when the sun is shining.
Even Heroes Need to Commute
Once in a while, when you step on public transport, you’ll notice someone dressed in a very eye-catching manner whether that’s a costume or just odd for the setting.
Still, it isn’t often that you see a group of people coordinated to look alike when you’re on your commute. Even further, you probably haven’t seen the Power Rangers together in a few years, at least. These commuters were just trying to save some time on their way to save the world.
Easy Tyga!
Even rappers don’t get an easy ride at the airport. They might be flying all over the country to try and get to big corporate meetings with their record companies. Or maybe they are flying to a studio to collaborate with an award-winning producer.
Who knows? At any rate, customs at the airport can make or break a commute, depending on how long it takes. Even Tyga gets stopped at customs from time to time.
He’ll Need Extra Space
Finally, we’ve talked a lot about costumed riders you might see on your commute but this one takes the cake. We have to say, it’s elaborate and probably took a lot of time.
Still, we have to wonder what brought this person to dress as a centaur and try to make it through the subway system. We also have to wonder how they’re going to get through the turnstiles in that costume to get on the subway at all.
The Cutest Stowaway
At first glance, this picture might just look like another annoyed subway passenger but if you look closer, there’s a secret. This commuter has a stowaway on board.
If you aren’t sure what we’re talking about yet, look inside her jacket at the cute little face peeking out. This little kitty might not be technically allowed on the subway but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have places to be. Plus, who could give away the secrets of a small kitten?
Just Let Me Through Already!
What else can be said about commuting via plane, going to the airport, and being stopped an unnecessary amount of times, especially when going through customs? Just based on the way this woman is walking through, you can tell that she’s extremely frustrated by the entire ordeal.
All she wants to do is get to another side of that flight, arrive at work, and do her thing to make her company all that money.
Even Celebrities Need to Get Around
Public transport can be a wild ride just considering the fact that you truly don’t know who you’re making your commute with. You might meet anybody!
This doesn’t just mean that you might see someone who you know or someone that you have something in common with. It truly means that you could meet almost anyone in the world on your morning commute – including a famous actor like Sir Ian McKellen! This situation would definitely surprise us.
A Nightmarish Disguise
We’ve all seen the random person in a costume, whether on the subway or just walking down the street. This one is a little creepier than the standard fare, though.
While wearing a costume on the subway is a fairly common sight, there’s something about this one that makes us laugh and draw back a bit. This Pikachu costume would be cute all on its own but what really elevates this picture is the hand coming out of the mouth to hold the handrail.
Black Is the New Orange
It is unclear whether this woman is actually responsible for the makeover of this car. One thing is for sure though, her dress is a perfect match for the vehicle and if anyone is going to stand out from the crowd on the way to work, then it is her.
This car is a thing of absolute beauty, the kind that you would find in a movie like Vanishing Point or Death Proof.
What a Hat
There are times that when you see something, you have to wonder if you really should point it out. This person definitely posed this question to the commuters around them.
While they technically aren’t doing anything wrong, they are confusing a lot of people. They’re sitting quietly, which is more than most people can ask of fellow commuters, but we have to wonder why they’ve chosen a piece of lettuce as their headwear for the day.
A Dinner Tray and All
The hard fact of the matter is that while useful, public transport is more catered to efficiency rather than making sure you have everything you need to be comfortable and enjoy the ride.
As a solution, you could always take the route that this person did, although your fellow passengers may not love you for it. When they didn’t have time to catch dinner before getting on the subway, they opted to pack a table of their own to enjoy their meal en route.
The Balloon Bandit
While public transit is helpful, we’ve already covered that it’s often stressful as well. It’s no wonder that some people put their efforts into cheering people up on the subway.
This man is a great example. Dubbed the “Balloon Bandit,” he uses his time on the subway to add balloon animals to the trains. You can even catch a glimpse of his face in this picture, staring straight at the camera from behind his book. He looks pretty proud!
Committed to the Aesthetic
When you fall into a certain aesthetic, there’s something admirable about taking things all the way. This person had their look down to the last extravagant detail.
There are plenty of people in the world who are drawn in by the goth subculture. Yet, not many of them reach the same level as this person who not only had the clothing and makeup on lock but even had a raven riding on their leg during their commute.
Crabs Everywhere
When you’re a commuter in New York, there isn’t much you haven’t seen. That means that when you see something new, it’s probably going to shock you.
Take this commuter’s word for it. When they went to get on the train one morning, they saw a sight they surely weren’t expecting: crabs. This wasn’t a single rogue crab in the subway either. The cluster included an alarming number of live crabs that we really aren’t sure how they got there.
A Surprise Grocery Store
As you walk into a subway train, you can’t really predict what weird thing you might see. That being said, you can always be caught off guard by something you’ve never seen before.
While this person was in Seoul, South Korea, they had an experience like one they had never seen before. When the subway train pulled up and the doors opened, they found not just seats and commuters inside but a grocery store so they could literally shop on the go.
Lost Lunch
As the subway doors start to close right as you run up to them, there’s a level of desperation that can’t be matched. Tardiness can often cause a whole host of problems for people.
If you can get even a little bit in the door, you can sometimes slip inside. On the other hand, using something you need to stop the closing doors can end badly. For this person, that meant their lunch went on a journey while they watched from the platform.
A Fight for the Ages
Most people have to take a second to brace themselves for what other commuters might bring to the table on their ride. That is if they aren’t seasoned enough already to handle the chaos.
If you’re new to public transit, there’s not much that could prepare you for a showdown between Batman and Darth Vader while you’re just trying to get home. Even in the background of this photo, you can see some of the commuters getting confused.
A Positive Interaction
It isn’t always something upsetting that catches the attention of commuters. Sometimes, it’s an odd sight but a heartwarming one that has people pulling out their cameras.
This interaction fell on the cute side of things, giving everyone a nice break from more tiring interactions. When this musician was playing violin on the subway train, he ended up serenading the youngest audience member, surely putting a smile on a few faces during their commutes.
The Plant Man
There are plenty of people on the subway that might be trying to make a quick buck while they get where they’re going. After all, there are plenty of people there to get your message out to.
The secret in business, though, is that you have to stand out from your competition. This person seemed to have tried to create a whole market of his own, though. After all, how many people can you buy tropical plants from while you still get to where you’re on your commute?
Going the Extra Mile
Anymore, the technology you have is clearly correlated with a variety of things, like your social status. That’s one reason that many people decide to jump on the latest luxury trends.
This person obviously wanted to join in on the AirPods fun but realized something that many people did: these headphones might be handy but pretty easy to lose as well. He seems to have found a solution, though, as he taped the AirPods into place without an issue.
Hey, It’s Me!
Before you even get on the train to continue your commute, you’ll pass by plenty of signs advertising various items and services. Sometimes, these can be funny all on their own.
The ad in question here isn’t necessarily funny on its own but it’s pretty funny considering who ran into it. While he may not be famous, he does look startlingly similar to the model in the ad. He even stopped to pose and snap a picture before moving on with his day.
He Fits Inside a Bag
The main rule for pets on the subway is that dogs are allowed on the New York subway only as long as they fit in a bag. Owners can only bring dogs that are easily carried.
This has led to some stretched interpretations of what these rules mean. For instance, this person managed to get their dog to fit in a bag. However, instead of a small lap dog, they found a bag that would suit their husky.
Please, Make Plenty of Noise
Sometimes, a musician playing in the subway can be a charming distraction from the day. Inside individual trains, it gets a little harder to get away from.
Being trapped in an individual subway car with someone loudly playing music often gets tiring to other commuters in short order. With some of the loudest instruments available, this person set up to play music during their commute – something we’re sure made all of their fellow commuters very happy.
The Best Backpack
There are plenty of things you’ll see on your commute that will leave you scratching your head. Other times, you might find yourself a little jealous of another commuter’s style.
This person left us and the person who saw them a little envious of their style. If you take a closer look, you’ll notice that behind his feet, he has a backpack that looks like a turtle shell. It’s something that would fit anyone who loves wildlife or misses a certain set of pizza-loving turtles.
Disappearing Ankles
There’s something funny about people accidentally matching their surroundings even outside of their commutes. That’s especially true when their outfit matches quite this well.
This person was enjoying a pretty standard commute one day when they noticed something odd when they looked down. When they glanced down, they noticed that something was missing from the person sitting across from them. As it turns out, their socks just matched the floor well enough to make their ankles disappear!
The Costume is Too Good
There’s something about certain costumes that make them a little too realistic for comfort even if they don’t look entirely realistic. They fall into the uncanny valley.
This is a concept that came up for one commuter while they were on their way to their destination. They caught a partial picture of someone who got on the train and was dressed like an army figurine. Even more unsettling, he has the pose down too!
Why Here? Why Now?
There are plenty of things you can do to pass the time during your commute. You could always listen to music – hopefully, with headphones – or even read a book or play a game on your phone.
What you probably shouldn’t do under any circumstances is cut onions while you’re en route. There are a lot of problems here and this person’s fellow passengers are right to be offended. For one, onions are a pain to everyone, and chopping them on a moving vehicle seems dangerous.
Bring Your Own Bed
Even if you’ve mastered the art of using public transit, a sight like this would take you by surprise before you have your morning cup of coffee.
There’s a lot to see in the subway but not seeing anyone is almost more reason for pause. This is particularly true if the subway is empty except for a bed. There are so many questions we have about this but the big one is when did they do this?
Apology Pizzas
Making a mistake sometimes means you need to think fast if you’re going to mend the bridges you might have burned. This means that you don’t have time to waste on the commute.
This person seems to have an idea that could either win someone back or make the situation much worse. However, he didn’t have time to wait and so everyone on the subway with him got to see him write a woeful note on the inside of the pizza box.
Just Keep to Yourself
To preface this picture, it’s important to highlight that this isn’t an official sign. Yet, even as a joke sign, it’s pretty eye-catching.
On top of that, even if it isn’t official, this sticker captures the spirit of public transportation. Even though everyone is riding close together, it’s not necessarily a time when everyone wants to socialize. It’s better to give everyone their space and try to keep the commute as peaceful as possible.
Don’t Bother Hiding
We’re not quite sure what’s going on here. Is this person trying to comply with the rule that his dog had to be in a bag or are they supposed to be hidden?
Either way, it definitely falls on the side of stretching the rules out a bit. In the end, the dog seems pretty nice and we’re sure there weren’t many commuters who weren’t a little happy to see them. The dog’s owner seems happy to pretend everything is normal.
A Row of Doppelgangers
We already took at a group that was coordinated as the Power Rangers. Yet, this group seems to take the cake because it seems distinctly less of a purposeful decision.
Instead, it seems like these men were just genuinely trying to get where they were trying to go when someone snapped a picture of them. It just so happens that there were a group of people who looked a lot of alike thanks to their similar outfits and shaved heads.
Aren’t You Forgetting Something?
While it does look like it’s “Bring Your Child to Work Day,” we’re not sure that this is the right way to do it. Actually, this only proves that being a father isn’t for everyone.
It does look like it’s a rookie mistake. An experienced dad wouldn’t do it. We bet he doesn’t even know that what he is doing is wrong on so many levels. Someone should call the child protection services!
Snooze or Lose
This looks like something between a snooze and a nose operation that went really wrong. Actually, there is also a chance that this picture was simply taken at the right moment: the bus or the underground suddenly stopped, which caused this woman to hit the railing. We bet it was painful.
Also, that’s why we would rather use a car than use public transportation — to avoid bizarre accidents such as this.
Pull Your Hand Out of There
This is awkward. Hasn’t he been taught that these kinds of activities are not supposed to be carried out in public? And what’s the deal with covering your face?
If you can’t see that mean that everyone else can’t see you? That’s not how it works, buddy. People have completely lost their minds. This borders on indecency and we are pretty certain that this is also illegal. We hope someone told him to stop.
Party Animal
Some people have weird tastes, in everything, if you get our game. It seems that this person was on their way to a very particular sort of party, the sleazy kind.
Now, we don’t judge anyone, but should they dress like that only after getting to where they need to? Why put it out on display? No one needs to know what do you enjoying doing in your free time.
The Good Life
Someone is defiantly living the good life. We have no idea how this guy managed to drag a sofa into the subway, but we kinda want to ride the subway now, assuming that we get to sit on the sofa.
We wonder what happens when he needs to get off. Does he take it with him or is he just going to leave it like that? Did we say we want it to ourselves already?
Enjoying the Breeze
It seems that this guy was a moment ago on the beach somewhere, and a moment later he just randomly appeared on the subway.
He seems so out of place to us on the one hand, but on the other hand, if you look closely, he barely seems to be perturbed about it. What gives people the right to act as if the subway is their own private living room? This is unacceptable.
New Fashion
Did anyone say go green? Well if anyone did, this guy answered their call. However, it seems like he took it a little too far, perhaps way too far.
How many soda cans do you need to collect to get enough opening tabs so that they will cover your whole body? We counted around a thousand. There is a good chance that we are wrong, but this is impressive and insane at the same time.
Is it Winter Outside?
We get it, it can get really cold in New York, but to what extent? Surely, there is no need to cover yourself in this from head to toe. How can you even see something?
There is a good chance that this guy isn’t even human and this is some diabolic monster that ran from some secret lab and is trying to blend in. We don’t know what to make out of this picture.
It’s a Rainy Day
It’s a known fact that the subway gets flooded sometimes, especially when it rains heavily and the pumps can’t just deal with such large amounts of water.
But, this is a bit extreme. Besides, this little plastic tent she is wearing for a hat won’t save her from the great deluge if it comes when she is riding the subway. We guess that you meet all kinds of weird people while using public transportation.
Get a Room!
There is definitely no other way of saying that. While we obviously support all forms of love, we don’t think that it should be publicly displayed, at least not in such an open way.
It’s one thing to hold hands and it’s a whole other thing to do what these guys are doing in public. This is just inappropriate and we are pretty sure it makes everyone else around them feel very uncomfortable.
Willie Wonka in Disguise
This person here reminded us of Johnny Depp when he played Willie Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. However, this is not (unfortunately) Johnny Depp.
However, he may be still heading to the chocolate factory as far as we can tell. Or, there is a good chance that he is on his way to some pretty cool party. Perhaps we should ask if we can join him the next time we see him.
Vampires Are Real
Ladies and gentlemen, in case you had any doubt, this image will serve as proof of the fact that vampires are real, but not only that they are real, but they also use the subway. Even more so, they are smartly dressed, just like in the movies.
We also bet that they are actually quite polite and maybe not so bloodthirsty. On second thought, we wouldn’t want to test that last bit of information.
It’s Just a Dream
We all dreamt of this at least once in our lives. Either you dream of waking up naked in the middle of some public space, or semi-dressed. However, we regret to inform you that this isn’t a dream.
We have no idea why on earth is this woman running around in the subway with only a towel to cover her body. Maybe she somehow fell through a wormhole? One moment she was in the shower and a second later she is in the middle of a subway platform during rush hour.
Pets Not Allowed
Some people like to keep some pretty random animals as pets. Some go for snakes, while some, apparently, go for their food. It appears that this guy just brought on board two of his pet rats.
We assume these are rats, but there is also a chance these are just mice. We can’t really tell the difference. These little pests can bite pretty hard by the way. Besides, shouldn’t they be on a leash anyway?
Subway Split
We have no idea who this guy is but we definitely admire him. Just look at this perfect split in them midair! How did he even manage to do that?
Also, we couldn’t help but notice that he looks just like Peter Pan. Maybe he was on his way to fight with Captain Hook and he was just practicing? You know, stretching out a little bit before the big fight.
Couldn’t Help Himself
Well, this is extremely awkward. What’s even more worrying is that he got himself a shirt that would enable him to do what he is doing. We all have our urges and needs, but this goes beyond the inappropriate.
This is just indecent and plainly put, just disgusting. Couldn’t he wait until he got home to do it? What happened to privacy? People have no shame these days, unbelievable!
A Sheep or a Coat?
Took us a while to determine if this woman was wearing a whole sheep or if it was just a tremendous coat. We also thought for a brief moment that this was an extension of her hair.
But, we don’t believe anyone would let their hair run that wild before trimming it. In any case, we bet that this lady and her coat have taken more than just one sit. By the looks of it, she occupied two full sits.
Private Living Room
We honestly despise commuters who think that the subway is their own private living room. Otherwise, how would you explain this? We get it, he was tired after a long flight and wanted to rest while getting back home.
However, this isn’t right. Other people need to use the subway too, and this is just plain rude. What makes people think that they can act as if they are the only ones in the world using public transportation?
Bring Your Own Seat
You can never guarantee that you’ll have a seat to steal on the subway. This is especially true if you’re traveling during a rush like coming home from work.
Most people get around this by resigning to stand for their ride and just hope it doesn’t take too long. This person went the extra mile to bring their own chair on the train and it seems to have come straight from their dining room! How did he carry this around all day?
Child’s Play
Even if you love horror movies, you’d probably jump a little to see those characters in front of you in real life. They’re made to be startling, after all.
By that concept, even if Child’s Play is your favorite classic horror movie, you’d probably be a little shocked to see them across from you during your commute. Even more unsettling than the costumes, this Chucky and Tiffany have the doll-like pose of these characters mastered.
Don’t Judge a Book
Too many people are quick to judge a book by its cover. For instance, there are plenty of people who would judge this person for their punk appearance.
However, that didn’t mean that this person hesitated when it came to helping someone else out. It just goes to show that while public transport can come with some uncomfortable situations but it can also show how people can handle situations where people could use an extra hand as well.
All Bananas Must Be Leashed
Waiting on the subway platform can mean a few impatient moments but it can also mean that you meet someone you never expected to in your daily life.
For example, we’re sure that not many people have met a person keeping their produce on a leash. On the bright side, we can guess that they’d be a responsible pet owner if they went as far as making sure that their bananas wouldn’t wander off or misbehave with people around.
Harp Practice
Music isn’t unheard of on public transport. Whether someone has an instrument or just can’t be bothered to use a pair of headphones, you’ll probably hear some from time to time.
However, there are some instruments that are more surprising than others. We’ve all seen someone with a guitar on public transport or even a keyboard or brass instrument. What you might not have seen is a sight this potentially peaceful: a commuter practicing angelic tunes on a harp.
